Write It Personal: una pratica formale is the book made for my MA thesis. It speaks about a new type design scene that brings out the letters as shapes that try to speak by themselves. This small publication speaks through a critical text and various interviews with these new type designers. Finally, it contains a reflection made by me through the creation of analogical and digital letters and posters with the aim of investigating how much the medium and material used could change the communicability of a letter.

In dem Buch wird dargestellt warum durch die Menge und Vielfalt der Aussagen und dem ständig wachsenden Zweifel an der Demokratie es letztlich am 6. Januar 2021 zu dem Sturm des Kapitols kam. Inhaltlich beschäftigt sich das Buch mit den Falschaussagen des ehemaligen US-Präsidenten Donald Trump, basierend auf der Datenbank der Washington Post. Die Journalisten [Sch5]Meg Kelly, Glenn Kessler und Salvador Rizzo haben die Datenbank aufgebaut. Diese fasst alle Falschaussagen von Präsident Trump zusammen und dokumentiert, sortiert diese und in jedem noch so kleinsten Detail und widerlegen diese. Die Falschaussagen sind auf den ersten Blick sofort erkennbar. Sie schreien einen im Layout fast an. Sie werden auch Eindeutig kategorisiert und laufen streng chronologisch im Buch. Auch ist die Häufigkeit mit welcher und wann diese Falschaussage wiederholt wurde. Manche Zitate sprengen nicht nur in ihrer Aussage den Rahmen, sondern auch in ihrer dokumentierten Länge. Die Widerlegung ist im Gegensatz dazu viel sachlicher, leiser und überlegter. Zum Einen gibt es eine kurze knappe Version und eine detailreiche, lange. Beide liegen verborgen unter der Aussage und die Kurzversion schaut knapp seitlich hervor. Um an die Fakten zu bekommen muss der Leser „hinter“ die Lüge blicken.

Das Filmplakat durchlebte in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen grundlegenden Wandel. Handgemalte Film- und Kinoplakate, wie sie bis Anfang der 2000er-Jahre in Leipzig allgegenwärtig waren, sind heute gänzlich ausgestorben. Das Buch Abgelöst beleuchtet diesen Bruch aus einer persönlichen Perspektive: Meine Mutter hat zwischen 1996 und 2001 als Kinoplakatmalerin im Werbeatelier der Filmtheaterbetriebe Leipzig GmbH gearbeitet. In dieser Zeit gestaltete sie großformatige Werbeplakate. Über viele Jahre hat sie wenige der gestalteten Plakate aufgehoben, diese jedoch später entsorgt. Um herauszufinden warum, begab ich mich auf die Suche nach den verschollenen Plakaten und hinterlassenen Spuren der Filmtheaterbetriebe. Neben der Sammlung verschiedener Fundstücke, setzt sich das Buch mit dem Thema der beruflichen Ablösung auseinander und nähert sich diesem mit gestalterischen Mitteln.

Abgelöst

Für mein Bachelorprojekt mittendrin unsichtbar habe ich drei Monate lang Notübernachtungen für wohnungslose Frauen in Berlin besucht. Der Gedanke an eine wohnungslose Person ergibt oft ein stigmatisiertes Bild: Ein Mann mit abgetragener Kleidung, der auf der Straße lebt. Dieses vereinfachte Bild der sichtbaren Wohnungslosigkeit steht oft in Verbindung mit gesellschaftlichen Sehkonventionen und wird durch Medien z. B. mit Porträts der Betroffenen verbreitet und verstärkt. Durch solch eine Verzerrung der Wahrnehmung bleiben viele Betroffene unbemerkt: Es sind Frauen, die aus Scham wegen ihrer Notlage und zum Schutz vor Gewalt unauffällig leben und ihre Wohnungslosigkeit verdeckt halten. Im Stadtbild fallen sie durch ihr optisches Erscheinungsbild nicht auf und existieren somit kaum in der gesellschaftlichen Wahrnehmung. Sie sind mittendrin – aber unsichtbar. Durch einen Perspektivenwechsel mittels Einwegkameras dokumentieren 13 wohnungslose Frauen ihr alltägliches Leben, um einen Einblick in ihre Lebenssituation zu geben. Geschichten zu den Fotos und Interviews geben ihnen eine Stimme. Auf Wunsch bleiben diese Frauen anonym und werden lediglich mit dem Anfangsbuchstaben ihres Vornamens abgekürzt. Die Publikation mittendrin unsichtbar befasst sich mit der Thematik der Unsichtbarkeit dieser Frauen und stellt aus Fotos, Bildunterschriften, Kurzbiografien und Interviews eine poetische Dokumentation dar. mittendrin unsichtbar – Wohnungslose Frauen in Berlin

Die Arbeit umfasst insgesamt 24 Bücher, die jeweils eine Stunde des Tages visualisieren. Jede Seite der Bücher stellt eine Sekunde dar und ist entsprechend einer Seitenzahl mit der jeweiligen Zeit gekennzeichnet. Durch eine länger herausschauende Seite wird jede Minute markiert. An der Schnittstelle jeder Stunde zur nächsten lässt sich das Buch zu einem Kreis zusammensetzen. Alle 24 Bücher könnten jedoch auch zu einer langen Buchkette chronologisch zusammengesetzt werden.
Anwendungsmöglichkeiten 
Zeit messen: Die Bücher können als eine Art Stoppuhr oder Timer verwendet werden. Die Seiten zu blättern dauert in etwa so lange wie die jeweilige Zeitangabe auf den Blättern. Ist der zu messende Ablauf abgeschlossen muss nur die Zeit auf der aktuellen Seite abgelesen werden. Eine gewisse Ungenauigkeit im Sekundenbereich ist hierbei zu erwarten.
Raum messen: Der Buchrücken kann mit dem aufgedruckten Lineal als Werkzeug zum Messen von Gegenständen verwendet werden. Der gemessene Wert kann anschließend auf der Seite vermerkt und gegebenenfalls zum besseren Wiederfinden mit einem Post-it versehen werden, somit ist das Buch Maßband und Notizheft zugleich.
Zeit festhalten: Die Bücher bieten die Möglichkeit Momente und Erlebnisse, an eine bestimmte Uhrzeit gebunden, schriftlich oder bildlich festzuhalten, da jede Sekunde des Tages als Seite vorhanden ist. Damit werden Erlebnisse nicht wie gewöhnlich nach ihrem Datum sortiert, sondern nach ihrer Uhrzeit. Über einen langen Zeitraum gesehen…

A student project about the koryo-saram phenomenon — an ethnic group of departed Koreans who live on the post-soviet territory (Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Belarus and more). This book is a hypothesis. There was no large sociological and historical research to compile this project. All materials are collected from open sources. The book does not provide conclusions and avoids value judgments, but presents the stories of individuals and reduces historicism to a dry description of known facts. The book is based on four stories of the writer Anatoly Kim, who witnessed the historical processes in the biographical novel My Past. Each plot corresponds to the time of that chapter tells. The story of Anatoly Kim does not represent the life of every departed Korean, but it does it colorfully enough for a basic understanding of history. The narration is supplemented by a photo chronicle of the resettlement and everyday life of Koryo-saram. Also there are collected and translated clippings from documents and publications. For example, the book contains pages from the Korean Worker newspaper. The main graphic idea of the book is a process of stratification and spreading, which is represented by the settlement map on the cover and half title. Also the type page itself transforms from the horizontal one to several narrow columns.

A book about my way to Germany Since I left Mosul with my family in June 2014 and the direction is an unknown way, the details of which I have photographed most of the stations and details of this way. Now I have reviewed these pictures with my history and my experience of crossing the sea. After these years I decided to leave this history, these pictures and these painful details in a book and extract them from myself.

Doch der Dialog und ebenso das Magazin – all das braucht Zeit. Eine Zeit, in der die patriarchalen Strukturen uns immer noch aufreiben. Wenn das passiert, nehmen wir unsere tödliche Mixtur aus Arroganz, Gier und Gewalt mit und werden diesen Planeten genauso zerstören wie wir es schon mit unserer Erde getan haben.« so schreibt Andrea Wulf in Alexander von Humboldt und die Erfindung der Natur. Humboldt hat das Band zwischen Natur und Mensch erfasst und in seinen Studien beschrieben. Sind diese Tier- und Pflanzenarten, die Humboldt damals entdeckt und katalogisiert hat, vom Wandel unserer Umwelt betroffen? Dieser Frage widmet sich der HUMB CATALOGUE. 127 der von Humboldts katalogisierten Tier- und Pflanzenarten wurden anhand der IUCN Red List für gefährdete Arten kategorisiert.

HUMB CATALOGUE

Dictionary of the Khazars is a novel written by Serbian writer Milorad Pavić in 1984, which was redesigned and illustrated by Darjan Hardi as his master’s thesis. Dictionary of the Khazars is a unique postmodernist novel that tells a story of the rise and fall of the Khazar nation through the views of three religions — Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. These newly created visuals of the book are inspired by the symbols, cultural rituals, and mythology that the author uses to reconstruct the world of the Khazars. Reflecting on Milorad Pavić, and his way of building the fictional reality in the text, this new edition also contains one added chapter, which consists of photo documentation that traces the steps of Khazars in Serbia, where both authors originally come from. The redesigned form of the Dictionary was then printed in 100 copies, where the illustrations were printed in six colors using the spot color offset at the Academy, while the cover was printed using the technique of silkscreen.

Als Ausdruck des Widerstands kennt Protest viele Formen, so birgt auch die Typografie als Kommunikationsmedium großes Potenzial für aktivistische Handlungen. Wie kann typografischer Protest aussehen? Wie kann Schrift selbst zur Akteurin des Widerstands werden und autonom agieren? Welche Schriften tun das bereits und welche Funktionsweisen stecken dahinter? Die Arbeit How letters resist lässt sich als Schriftenkatalog verstehen, der eine Sammlung von protestierenden Schriftsystemen aus verschiedenen zeitlichen, räumlichen und gesellschaftspolitischen Kontexten portraitiert. Widerschriften, wie ich sie nenne, widersetzen sich. Dieser Akt des Widersetzens kann sowohl offensiv öffentlich als auch subversiv und versteckt stattfinden. So umfasst dieser typografische Exkurs Beispiele aus der Kryptographie, dem Hacking, dem aktivistischen, vielfältigen und nachhaltigen Typedesign und der Demonstration auf der Straße.

How letters resist

Glowing Eyes is a journey into the depths of the Amazonas rainforest in Brazil through the myths of this region, which play a leading role in the life of the forest and the forest inhabitants. These stories show human as part of his environment and thus offer different perspectives than the Western concept of nature. Myths have a great influence on how we perceive our environment, move in it, act and deal with it, therefore one can say that the myths from the Amazon have an influence on the ecological system. But there are also the myths that were created by colonialists to legitimize exploitation and destruction, they created nature that acts as a counterpart, which is wild and which must be tamed. Glowing eyes conjures of images up again, it is a physical exploration and representation of the mythology of the forest. In order not to create a counterpart through a gaze of the other, the artist switches from subject to object, that case the forest, it’s myths and inhabitants, and gaves object the possibility to became subject. These time- and spaceless pictures were mixed up with collected stories in longer stays in Brazil, in order to contextualize these timeless myths into the present reality.

Glowing Eyes

Die Aufstellung erforscht anhand eines Archivs aus 500 Metallobjekten das Nachleben der kollektiven Katastrophe des 2. Weltkriegs im Wohnhaus einer deutschen Familie. Die Objekte, die der Großvater der Autorin – ein ehemaliger Wehrmachtssoldat – im Keller ihres Elternhauses fertigte, werden einzeln abgebildet und auf ihre Formsprache untersucht. Um den Einfluss der unausgesprochenen Kriegserlebnisse auf den Familienalltag zu zeigen, werden den Objekten sowohl Kriegsfotografien als auch Familienfotos gegenübergestellt, die den Alltag der Familie bis in die frühen 2000er-Jahre zeigen. Durch die Überlagerung der Fotografien ragen die Objekte in den Alltag und das Aufwachsen von drei Generationen hinein. Das Buch kommt ohne Worte aus und macht anhand einer individuellen Biografie die zur handwerklichen Routine gewordenen Verarbeitung einer kollektiven Krise erfahrbar.

Ecstatic Solitude Isolation and self-reflection. As a year of new and unfamiliar situations 2020 gives us the opportunity to change our point of view. Everyday life is decelerated, social contacts are limited. Horne is no longer just the initial point-now it’s the center we orbit around in a closer distance [, trying not to burn out]. A place of well-being and retreat shares space with a workroom, with a studio. The physical standstill, the reduction of movement is limiting but also creates new perspectives and ways of perceiving. This is about confrontations with ourselves, the environment and photography unite. During the first lockdown, 16 different photographic works were created in the course of one class. Through the intensity of this time, a dynamic and energy developed among the students and the desire to create a common visual dialogue from the works emerged. A personal insight into the everyday life (photographs and diaries), which invites one to lose oneself in the closeness and intensity of this time.

Ecstatic Solitude

A photographic research on the colonial heritage of western fascination for tropical plants Monstera, Fiddle Leaf and Pilea are the stalky stars on social media. Owners call themselves “Plantparents” or “Plantfluencers”, and the “Houseplantclub”, which regularly shares photos of the most unusual plants, now has over a million followers. What is behind the increased interest in domesticated nature in the big-city apartments of style-conscious millennials? Where does this tropical longing come from, which is reflected in the “Urban Jungle”? Do people simply feel good when they are surrounded by nature, or is it rather the bad conscience towards it, that prompts them to cultivate the indoor tropics and at the same time watch the rainforest burn? What most plantfluencers may not realize is that the homegrown “modern urban jungle” is part of a colonial tradition that developed in the 19th century through colonial exploitation and shipping. Plant hunters at the time gave the wealthy bourgeoisie access to exotic plants, which they acquired for a high price. Decorative greenery was elevated to a status symbol, as only those with sufficient time and property could afford houseplants at that time. They were presented to guests in the salon and became the new-fashioned prop in family photos or portraits. Today, more ordinary plants can be bought cheaply at the hardware store, but the fancier and larger they’re grown, the faster the price skyrockets. For example, a seedling of the rare…

Exotic Plant Hunters

Für die Arbeit Fragment &#038; Einheit – Visuelle Dialoge subjektiver Wahrnehmungen habe ich ein visuelles Experiment durchgeführt, bei dem 35 Gestalter•innen mitgemacht haben. Die 35 Gestalter•innen wurden in sieben Prozesse in Gruppen mit jeweils fünf Personen aufgeteilt. Die Teilnehmer•innen sind anonym geblieben und wurden möglichst divers zusammengesetzt (ausgewogener Anteil von Frauen und Männern und unterschiedliche Fachgebiete/Medien). Das Experiment basiert – grob gesagt – auf dem Spiel Stille Post: Bei dem Spiel geht es um die informelle Weitergabe von verbalen Informationen und deren Verfälschung durch individuelle Interpretationen. In meiner Arbeit habe ich ein Wort vorgegeben, welches Gestalter•in A in Form von einem gestalteten Bild interpretiert und an mich zurückgeschickt hat. Dieses Bild habe ich dann an den oder die nächste Gestalter•in verschickt, woraufhin ich wieder ein Bild zurückbekommen habe. Das Ergebnis sind sieben Prozesse mit jeweils einem Anfangswort und fünf Bildern. Um die Prozesse einheitlich beginnen zu lassen und um die Beziehung zwischen Wörtern und Bildern aufzugreifen beginnt jeder Prozess mit einem Wort. Die Auswahl ergibt sich aus Umfragen der Gesellschaft für deutsche Sprache, die jedes Jahr zehn Wörter des Jahres festlegen. Fragment & Einheit – Visuelle Dialoge subjektiver Wahrnehmungen

An exhibition catalogue designed for the fictional exhibition Out on The Edge: Physicality of Net Art. Celebrating the culture of Post-Internet, the exhibition showcases net artists who use physical objects to express the influence between the internet and art. It expounds the significance of them: serving as documentation that makes network gestures available in a gallery or other settings. In the meantime, it also begs the question: Does the Internet exist? What is the evidence of its existence and how to capture it?

Out of The Edge: Physicality of Net Art

Rush Print is a new annual publication coming out from the graphic design department of ArtEZ Arnhem (GDA). Rush Print is new magazine annually releasing out from the contributors of Grafisch Arnhem. Throughout spreads, it contains graphic design related subjects such as Types, Time, Talks, etc. 
The inaugural issue focuses on the topic of ‘Bad Type’, initiated by Dong Bin Han and Benjamin McMillan. A loose synonym of bad in this book is amateur or ugly which is what contributors deliver as a student. The content ranges from interviews, workshops and anecdotes with GDA participants. The entire publication is typeset in student-made typefaces so the book also functions as a type specimen. 
“May we want to reckon the time of the position ‘student’ not from the progressive aspect of amateur towards pro. Besides the fact that every step of life is an ongoing learning, there’s a clear physical (virtual) circumstance of school and an educational boundary for student, which makes student’s moment independent from any other vocations. Extra time of working on one subject with mistakenly expended deadlines, being experimental and anti-aesthetic by testing its performance, the growth on having own tone of (visual) voice while mumbling and simultaneously thinking the mumbling can be also a kind of voice. There are untamed beauties in this position.”

Rush Print 0 – bad type

Sorry, I fucked this up ist eine Sammlung von Polaroids der Fotografin Melina Papageorgiou, die von 2013 bis 2020 in Berlin, Hamburg und Griechenland aufgenommen wurden. Sie bilden Alltagssituationen, Porträts von Freunde und Begegnungen ab. Das Cover sowie der Titel der Arbeit Sorry, I fucked this up stammen von einem Polaroid, das mit diesen Worten beschriftet wurde. Durch das starke Vergrößern der Bilder und dem bewussten Ausschneiden des klassischen weißen Rahmens der Polaroids werden die Bilder rauer und wirken näher. Fehler, die bei den sofort entwickelnden Fotos häufig auftreten, wie ausgebrannte Punkte, der Rote-Augen-Effekt, Unter- bzw. Überbelichtung und Unschärfe werden jetzt verstärkt. Das ungewöhnliche Format des Buches orientiert sich am Format der Polaroids; die offene Bindung und das raue Papier unterstreichen den roughen Charakter der Fotos zusätzlich.

Sorry, I fucked this up

In der Bachelorarbeit* tifo setzte ich mich mit der visuellen Kommunikation in der Subkultur der Ultras auseinander. Ultras, fanatische Fußballfans, sind Teil einer heterogenen Bewegung, die aber durchaus vergleichbare Grundeinstellungen mit sich bringen. Anhand von Recherche-Ergebnissen wurden die verschiedenen Kommunikationswege, visuellen Eindrücke und ihr Gruppenverhalten/Grundeinstellung erörtert und bebildert. Es wurden Kontexte zu anderen Subkulturen geschaffen und miteinander verglichen. Die erarbeiteten Ergebnisse wurden in Buch, Video und Plakatform präsentiert.

Abstract: 
In the spirit of Preciado and his precursors, this lecture proposes to understand materiality not in opposition to a supposed immateriality of ‘the digital,’ but rather to conceive of it as a gradual phenomenon. Taking Preciado’s criticism of “the dualist epistemology of the West” as a starting point, different categories of materiality (literal, forensic, formal, distributed, performative, digital) will be reviewed with regards to the field of book design and publishing. 
A reassessed, ‘de-binarised’ concept of materiality allows for new ways of discussing analogue and digital publications beyond the common dichotomies, shifting our focus to “the strange space [&#8230;] between,” which can already be found in Derrida.
Bio: 
Hagen Verleger is a multidisciplinary designer, editor, researcher, and lecturer from Berlin. In his work, which often revolves around the practice and theory of editing and publishing, he explores themes such as power structures within institutions, collective models of authorship, and materially embedded ideologies.

Hagen Verleger: the strange space [...] between

Abstract:
I’ve noticed how websites disguise themselves by repeating the same structures and similar templates, and devices are getting vague by simplifying the design. Tools and platforms hide themselves by removing their own characteristics, blurring the border between real and virtual (web) space, and the border between contents. Under the concept of ‘user friendliness’ (which is considered to be the ideal design), most websites and devices use standardized design and interface conventions that don’t require the user to learn how to use a new interface – instead, users repeat the behavior they’ve been accustomed to. This automatic repetition of action causes people to lose their content awareness.
So, to counteract this, I am trying to create websites and tools that are more content-focused and expressive, with the web space strongly constructed and curated.
 
Bio:
Yehwan Song studied graphic design at Hongik University in Seoul (2014–2020), HDK Gothenburg University (2016) and the School For Poetic Computation in New York (2019). Through her design practice, she invents new methods and ways to use the web as a space for content awareness, always challenging interface conventions and standardized design. In this process, wonderfully interactive and playful approaches emerge.

Reading of Paul B. Preciado’s text “After the Book, Lets Print on Flesh” by Philipp Adrian Djokic 

Abstract:
Was nehmen wir wahr und was sind unsere „blinden Flecke“? Kritische Gestaltung ist nicht nur eine Frage der Funktion oder des politischen Gehalts. Sie muss sich an der „sinnlichen Ordnung“ einer Gesellschaft abarbeiten, sprich: an den Konstellationen von Formen, mit denen wir täglich umgehen, und dem Wahrnehmungswissen, das sich mittels dieser Formen reproduziert. Nur so lassen sich Trans-Formen entwickeln, die ein anderes Wahrnehmen und andere Beziehungsweisen ermöglichen. Critical Design ist ästhetisch.
 
Bio:
Sophia Prinz ist Kultursoziologin und Kulturtheoretikerin. Nach dem Studium der Kulturwissenschaften (Universität Lüneburg/Leuphana), war sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in Bereich Kultursoziologie (Universität Konstanz/Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt Oder). Sie promovierte mit einer Arbeit zur Praxistheorie der Wahrnehmung (2014 erschienen unter dem Titel Die Praxis des Sehens. Über das Zusammenspiel von Körpern, Artefakten und visueller Ordnung). Von 2018–2020 war sie Gastprofessorin für Theorie der Gestaltung/Gender Studies an der UdK Berlin. Neben ihrer universitären Tätigkeit war sie an zahlreichen Ausstellungsprojekten beteiligt (u.a. am Johann Jacobs Museum in Zürich und am MKG in Hamburg). Neben Praxis, Körper- und Wahrnehmungstheorien beschäftigt sie sich mit dem Wechselverhältnis von Gesellschaft und Gestaltung sowie der transkulturellen „Migration der Form“ in der globalen Moderne. Aktuell ist Sophia Prinz Fellow am Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) und wird ab August 2021 die Professur für Designtheorie und -geschichte an der ZHdK Zürich übernehmen.

Many familiar items can be turned into a playmate: bottles, slippers, household utensils. We accept them unchanged in their forms, and we give them a personality. With little money and time, a book turns into a lively character. 
Once one has become conscious of the possibilities, miniature things leap into view from the store shelves, and whole forests of trees can be seen in a weed. For this tenth Act, Bibliomania zooms to a very (un)realistic diorama — it’s a box, it’s a dream, it’s a book in-between.

Leibniz is like all these tabs you have open in your browser for months, the ones which you sometimes forget about but then open arbitrarily one day to find some pretty nice surprises inside.
Like Moritz Paul’s debut release on Fourth Wave, in 2013 whose wonky house grooves greet you like the Facebook profile of an old friend you wanted to write a while ago because you felt like you two should totally catch up. Or his subsequent records for labels like Uncanny Valley’s shtum and Rat Life series or Ortloff from Leipzig, where he used to live before relocating to Berlin. They were all a bit rougher, more technoid even, but all very much influenced by what you can read about in that comprehensive history of the hardcore continuum that you’d stumbled upon a while back when you had that “phase” in which you said “massive” way too often.
Eventually, you will open this one YouTube tutorial for something Ableton-related and recognise the voice talking about drum beats — you’ve totally heard that one before. Perhaps on Leibniz’s “Online” EP, the first release on hundert, the label he co-founded in 2017 with his partners in crime from DJ bwin and DJ OK. They draw from exactly the kind of theoretical ramblings about the internet, modern life and interpersonal communication in this age that you usually click around 4am, but then can’t get yourself to read because life’s too complex as it is already, isn’t it? Meanwhile, Leibniz himself is sampling all those bits and pieces, these alien human voices and sound artefacts from around the web to draw connections between people and things. He’s a bit like that kooky guy who sends you links to extensive political commentary, always shortly after six in the morning for some reason. You appreciate that, though, because who else is so consistent like that these days?
But finally, there’s Leibniz’s Soundcloud profile in which you can get lost more easily than if it were a constant stream of tumblr memes. There’s his more belting live sets, there’s his slew of remixes for other artists, his many B2B sets with friends and family or some teasers for the Fier nights he puts on with the hundert and PH17 crews at Berlin’s ://about:blank club. It’s as if you’d incidentally beatmatched three different tracks that started automatically after you accidentally clicked them — it all comes together here, it all suddenly makes sense. And you know what — you could just leave those running and close all other tabs, get on with your life and maybe, finally, take that shower.

Born in Kawasaki in Japan and raised in Paris, she studied photography in Berlin before studying Multimedia / VR-Design at the Burg Giebichenstein Art University in Halle. The short film PIST PROTTA THE MOVIE. 
Starting point is the Danish art magazine PIST PROTTA. It appeared for the first time 40 years ago in 1981, and in all these years tried to be art in its own right and not only a magazine about art. PIST PROTTA changes size (and sometimes even shape) for every issue published. We see it as an experimental art magazine, which reflects the magazine as an idea, but also an experiment with different printing techniques, paper, bindings, typography, concepts etc. We hope to reflect this in film in such a way, that the film itself will be a work of art. 
The film consists of shots of pages from all issues of PIST PROTTA. The camera zooms in on the pages and in the editing we have speeded up everything. An exemplary representation of the magazine and a delirious time travel. On the soundtrack there are some discussions (in Danish) of PIST PROTTA and an attempt to make music. For clarification the soundtrack is also speeded up.

“It’s a book, …”, the annual meeting of producers in the field of independent publishing, takes place for the twelfth time in 2021. For the eighth year in a row, it is developed as part of a project seminar at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig. A group of students is conceiving, developing and preparing the event.
As we were in the final stages of preparing the last edition of the “It’s a book, …” in early March 2020, we were forced to cancel it due to the measures taken to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. After all, the culture of independent publishing manifests itself especially through fairs and thus is currently facing difficult times. We were wondering in what form the “It’s a book, …” could take place this year. How can we create a place for the public under the current premises? How can we bundle the accumulated knowledge of the past symposia of the “It’s a book, …”? Which networks can we activate to perceive the distances no longer as spatial obstacles, but—with temporal shifts—as a positive meeting?
Beyond large gatherings of people that have become critical places, we are questioning and activating the digital space that has generally been activated in the cultural sphere the last year—in order to once again highlight the nature of the “It’s a book, …” as its real strength: as a place of encounter, as a marketplace for books and knowledge, and as a place for exchanging ideas and debates. For the first time we will host a purely digital event on a specially developed and designed website implemented in close collaboration with Berlin design studio UNFUN. This new website will remain online permanently as a new and growing platform with a non-commercial marketplace and has been conceived in intensive exchange and with great commitment from the publishers.
This year’s fair is called “It’s a book, it’s a screen, it’s a space in between”: What does this digital space look like? How do we create spaces that visitors can enter and leave? How do we simulate the possibility of active participation, of exchange and physical presence not only virtually, but also implement it factually in the virtual space?
The website is our container for the “It’s a book, …” 2021: It is a digital, non-commercial marketplace, it is a showcase for publishers, designers and bookstores and it is an international platform for producers and their programs. We reframed the student competition, critically evolved from the discussions at the last “It’s a book, &#8230;”, which focused the evaluation of books. Through unboxing videos we want to represent part of the tactile experience at book fairs that is clearly missing being a digital event. And we create the website as a space for our guests invited to the symposium; we are happy to welcome Alexandru Balgiu and Olivier Lebrun, Leibnitz, Lina Ehrentraut, Sophia Prinz, Yehwan Song and Hagen Verleger among others for their lectures and performances respectively.
The symposium and other formats will be partly recorded beforehand, partly broadcast live from our studio at the HGB. Altogether they will be transmitted to other parts of the world and they will be available in a media library later on. Our studio is part of “Broken relations – Infrastruktur und Unterbrechung Kunst unter pandemischen Bedingungen”, a project of the HGB Gallery in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Our setup extends the project into the atrium of the HGB that is usually welcoming visitors at the fair with many exhibiting publishers—as a reference to the place where the “It’s a book, &#8230;” took place the last years. Certain aspects of the open and modular / reusable structure of the studio also connect with the design and the codes of the website.
For our thematic focus, we are looking at the philosopher Paul B. Preciado. His writings are the starting point for us to think about new forms of the public space. It is about understanding the change of the world not only through the restrictions we feel after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but to consider this moment embedded in conflicts and struggles that were already there before. “It’s a book, it’s a screen, it’s a space in between”: The space in between refers to the situation of transition the world is currently in. Between book and screen, from a disciplinary society to a society of control, from a fixation on two genders to diversity, from power to participation.
